Paws & Purpose helps small businesses hire smarter and with confidence — so you stop losing time and money on the wrong people.
"No fluff. Just real growth."
About
With nearly 25 years of corporate leadership experience — spanning banking, organizational development, and talent strategy — I've seen firsthand what happens when businesses hire well, and what it costs when they don't.
I started Paws & Purpose because small businesses deserve the same quality hiring support as the big guys — without the big price tag or the runaround. I'm approachable, direct, and genuinely invested in your success. No fluff. Just real results.
I'll be honest with you — I've been that person too. Twice in my career I found myself in organizations where the culture simply didn't fit who I was. I showed up, I worked hard, I delivered. But I wasn't myself. I was unhappy. And no amount of skill or experience could fix what was fundamentally a misalignment of values.
Those experiences didn't break me — they shaped me. They taught me something that no textbook ever could: that cultural fit isn't a soft concept. It's the difference between someone who thrives and someone who quietly struggles. Between a team that builds something and one that just gets through the day.
That's why I built this. Not just as a service — but as a commitment to helping businesses get it right from the start.
When I'm not helping businesses find their next great hire, you'll find me cheering on my daughter Anna as she takes on college, sneaking away to Barbados whenever humanly possible, or hunting down the perfect lavender latte. I've been known to quote U2 lyrics in a business meeting, and I firmly believe that laughter is non-negotiable in work and in life. My spouse keeps me grounded through all of it.
People always ask about the name. The truth is simple — it comes from my dogs.
Bitty is my soul dog. Mini is my fearless little blind Chihuahua who navigates the world with more confidence than most people I know. And Oliver — my sweet 13-year-old golden retriever — we just said goodbye to him recently. There's a hole in our house that only a golden can leave.
These three taught me everything about loyalty, showing up, and fitting in somewhere you truly belong. Bitty loves unconditionally. Mini never lets her limitations define her. And Oliver — Oliver showed up every single day with his whole heart, and he deserved every bit of love and care we gave him in return.
That's what I look for in a great hire — someone who shows up fully, and a workplace that honors that. The right fit works both ways. That's what I promise every client I work with.
Paws & Purpose is for them.

A Different Perspective
The best employees — like the best dogs — give you everything when trust is established. Hiring for culture fit isn't soft. It's one of the most strategic decisions a small business can make.
Dogs respond to consistency, energy, and honesty — not titles. Great hires do the same. A toxic culture drives top performers out faster than any competitor ever will.
A dog without clear direction becomes anxious and destructive. So does a new hire without structure, expectations, and support. Onboarding isn't a formality — it's how you set people up to succeed.
No ego. No excuses. The most valuable quality on any team is reliability. You can train skills. You can't train character — which is exactly why assessment matters before the offer letter.
The Paws & Purpose Difference
Twenty-five years of organizational leadership taught me one thing above everything else: you can train skills. You cannot train character. And a resume will never tell you which one you're getting. I didn't build this from a textbook — I built it from watching what happens when businesses get hiring right, and what it costs when they don't.
They show up in the small moments. The pause before answering a hard question. The way someone talks about a former colleague. What lights them up — and what doesn't.
Most small businesses make bad hires for one reason: they hire who they like, not who fits. Likeability is easy to fake in an interview. Character isn't. Culture fit isn't. That's what Paws & Purpose is built to find.
"Skills can be taught. Culture fit can't. I built this process around that truth."
New hires leave within the first 90 days
Without structure, your new hire is already deciding whether to stay — before you've noticed a problem.
Of hiring mistakes are preventable
Most bad hires aren't bad people — they're the wrong fit for the role, the team, or the culture. A behavioral assessment catches this before day one.
Faster productivity with structured onboarding
Employees who experience structured onboarding reach full productivity in half the time of those left to figure it out alone.
Of hiring failures are due to attitude, not skill
According to Leadership IQ research, most bad hires fail because of motivation, accountability, and fit — exactly what behavioral assessments are built to measure.
The Assessment
"Resumes tell you what someone has done. Our assessment tells you how they'll show up when things get hard."
The Paws & Purpose Behavioral Assessment is a proprietary scenario-based tool developed from 25 years of real-world organizational leadership experience. It doesn't ask candidates how they'd like to see themselves — it puts them in real workplace situations and measures how they actually respond.
Every question is built around behavioral scenarios — the kind of moments that reveal character, not just personality. Integrity under social pressure. Motivation when no one is watching. How someone reacts when things fall apart.
Skills can be taught. Character can't. This is built to find the difference.
Are they who they say they are when no one's watching?
What actually drives them — and will it last?
How do they show up when things get hard?
Do they own their outcomes or explain them away?
Can they read people, build trust, and bring humanity to the work?
One important note: The Paws & Purpose assessment is a proprietary behavioral scenario tool built from 25 years of leadership experience. It is not a clinically validated psychometric instrument — and we are transparent about that. What it is, is a powerful data point in a complete hiring process that includes Shana's personal interview, professional analysis, and expert recommendation.
No single tool should ever be the only basis for a hiring decision. And with Paws & Purpose, it never is.
Optional add-on: For clients who want an additional data point, Shana offers a validated DISC Behavioral Profile through Assessments 24x7 — a scientifically validated tool that measures how candidates communicate, respond to pressure, and fit within your team. Available as an add-on to any hiring engagement for $99 per candidate.
